The Charity I have chosen for my Mayor's Appeal 2014-15 is the:-

RNIB Cymru, The Royal National Institute for the Blind in Wales.

Imagine waking up and not being able to see your partner or your children, to not be able to safely walk out of your house or even make yourself a cup of tea. This will happen to three people in Wales today and every day with an estimated 2500 in Blaenau Gwent alone. Children, teenagers, graduates, mothers, fathers, businessmen and grandparents, blindness can affect anyone at any time. Blind and partially sighted people are just like everybody else but because of the nature of their disability they are some of the least visible members of society.

The RNIB work together with schools and education to inform/educate about the challenges faced everyday by children and young people living with sight loss. They provide access and advice to accessible materials, training, curriculum materials and the everyday support that is needed to ensure young people, up to the age of 19, have the same experiences as sighted young people.

The employment services work with recruitment agencies, work placement schemes and businesses to enable blind and partially sighted people to access the working world.  There is continually support afterwards to assist with workplace accessibility!

The RNIB also run a welfare service which is paramount for blind and partially sighted individuals all over Wales. It ensures they are supported in the right way financially and emotionally, especially in this time of welfare reform.
