2013-2014 Cllr Tommy Smith

The Inauguration of Councillor Tommy Smith as Tredegar Town Mayor and Councillor Ryan Watkins as Tredegar Town Deputy Mayor took place on Wednesday 1st May 2013. A short Service was held in The Council Chamber at Bedwellty House followed with friends and family joining to congratulate Cllr Smith in The Carriage Room.

For his Year in Office, Cllr Smith chose the Valleys Life After Stroke Group as the recipient of his Mayor's Appeal.

Valleys Life After Stroke (affililated with The Stroke Association)

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off which may be as a result of a blood clot or a blockage in an artery. The effect can be devastating and life changing not just for the sufferer but for their families too. Strokes are the fourth biggest killer and there is currently a campaign giving advice about F.A.S.T., the stroke recognition. Face, Arms, Speech, Time are all key indicators that someone is suffering a stroke and if these signs are recognised quickly it can increase their chance of survival. Click on F.A.S.T. to view the Stroke Association's information leaflet.

The Valleys Life After Stroke group was setup and is run by volunteers who have suffered strokes themselves. The group is open to everyone, stroke sufferers and their families or carers. The aim is to give people the chance to share their experiences with people who will know what they are going through; to offer advice and support; to help boost confidence and reduce the feeling of isolation. The group meets at the Community Lounge, Roderick Hill Court, Dukestown Road, Tredegar. Besides their regular meetings, trips, guest speakers and other activities are arranged.

The Valleys Life After Stroke group meet 2 Wednesdays per month, please contact Lesley Tel: 01495 726333 for further information.

For further information about strokes and services available to sufferers and their families please visit the Stroke Association's website at www.stroke.org.uk .
