The Alzheimer's Society

I would guess everyone here has been affected by Alzheimer's one way or another as it is not an illness suffered solely by the person it as great affect on the families too. Here are some very sad statistics:

  • There are currently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK.
  • There are over 16,000 younger people with dementia in the UK.
  • There will be over a million people with dementia by 2021.
  • Two thirds of people with dementia are women.
  • One third of people over 95 have dementia.
  • 60,000 deaths a year are directly attributed to dementia.

So you can see how worthwhile this charity is and they need all the help they can get to fight this disabling disease.

A number of fundraising events are being planned for Cllr Willis's Year in Office, including a Golf Day hopefully once again at Tredegar & Rhymney Golf Club, and information on these events will be available on this page as soon as they have been confirmed.

The Alzheimer's Society Blaenau Gwent Services

"There are an estimated 958 people with dementia living in Blaenau Gwent, many of whom live at home without may services. The Blaenau Gwent Services of the Society aims to help people people with dementia and their families through:

  • Outreach & information Project
  • Providing information & emotional support
  • Signposting to local services which can offer additional help
  • Home & office visits
  • Local carer support meetings
  • Younger person with dementia Project
  • Organised outings & social events
  • Carers' education & information sessions
  • Gwent Befriending Project.

All services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. There are regular carer support meetings at Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm, College Road, Ebbw Vale on the last Monday of the month from 1.30pm to 3pm."

To kick start the Appeal a raffle was held after the Inauguration Meeting and I am pleased to say that a fabulous £250.00 was raised, thank you.

Sunday 16th September 2012, Alzheimer's Society Cardiff Memory Walk 2012

The Alzheimer's Society will be holding its Memory Walk at Cooper's Field, Bute Park, Cardiff. The aim of Memory Walk is to raise funds to provide services that improve the lives of people with dementia. The walk commences at 1pm but registration for the walk takes place prior to this so advisable to arrive by 12pm.

This event is planned to be a fun filled family day with entertainment throughout the day including music, children entertainment and fundraisers. The Memory walkers have the opportunity to do either a 3.5km or 12km walk talking in some of the beautiful natual features of Bute Park and Sophia Gardens.

Attending this year's event with be our own Cllr Bernard Willis who will be making the presentation of a cheque for the funds he raised during his Year in Office as Tredegar Mayor. He will also be presenting the Alzheimer's Society with a Welsh Rugby Grand Slam Team signed rugby ball as part of his Mayor's Appeal donation. The rugby ball will be raffled on the day to raise more funds for this very worthy appeal. So please if you have the chance pop along to Cooper's Field on Sunday to show your support.

Saturday 10th March 2012 - The Mimics

The Mimics are performing at The Moose Hall, Tredegar in aid of our Mayor's Appeal. Entry is £3 per person and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets are available from Cllr Bernard Willis and the Town Council Office.

Friday 24th February 2012 - The Patrick Sheen Singers

The Patrick Sheen Singers performed a concert for the Tredegar Mayor's Appeal at St George's Church, Tredegar. It was a fabulous night of musical entertainment which was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody. The whole evening raised £575 for the Appeal and would not have taken place if it was not for Cllr Anita Hobbs and Father John Davis who between them both organised and choreographed the whole event - THANK YOU!

During the evening a small raffle was held with the following prizes generously donated as follows:-

Mayor's Appeal Raffle

The Mayor's Appeal Raffle Draw took place at noon in the Council Chamber, Bedwellty House Tredegar on 1st March 2012. The invited guests to monitor and help randomly draw the tickets were Donna Coughlin (Alzheimer's Society), Jim Davies, Phillip Skinner, Father John Davis, Rev. Mike Shephard, Cllr Andrew Cotton and also present were Christine Keane (Town Clerk) and Annette Jones (RFO). Winners of the prizes are as follows:-

Saturday 15th October 2011 - Tredegar Mayor's Charity Golf Day.

Tredegar & Rhymney Golf Club will be hosting the Annual Mayor's Charity Golf Day with all proceeds in aid of the Tredegar Mayor's Appeal. First Tee off is at 10am and multiple prizes to be won. Entry fee is £40 per Visitors Team and £20 per Members Team with Teams of four STABLEFORD Competition, best 3 Scores on each hole. Closing the Appeal:-

As the new Mayor takes Office in May 2012 this Appeal is closed and the New Mayor opens his Appeal.

On Sunday 16th September 2012 Cllr Willis attended the Alzheimer's Society Cardiff Memory Walk which took place at Cooper's Field, Bute Park Cardiff. The event was a fun filled family day out which gave friends and family a chance to catch up and have some fun whilst fundraising. It was a fabulous day with live music and kid's entertainment. It was the ideal opportunity for Cllr Willis to present the cheque from his Mayor's Appeal, final total £8487.73 (including Barclays match funding), with the rugby ball signed by the Grand Slam winning Welsh Rugby Team. The Alzheimer's Society will be giving the rugby ball as a gift to the person who raised the most funds for this year's Memory Walk.

Thank you to everyone who so graciously donated, not just money but time to help Cllr Willis raised this wonderful amount for his Appeal.
