Heritage Summit, Wednesday 9th March 2011 at 7pm, Tredegar Rugby Club.

Tredegar is a town with a proud history and unique heritage. It is the home of Nye Bevan and the birthplace of the National Health Service. It boasts the beauty and majesty of Bedwellty Park and its built heritage includes the iconic Tredegar Town Clock, but all is not well in the town. The town centre shop keepers are doing a good job of keeping the local economy ticking but the real concern are the key buildings that are the basis for the character and heritage of this former iron making town.

Over the last few years, Tredegar Town Council has been fighting for the future of the town's built heritage. The town centre was the first planned town in the UK but now several of it's key buildings are at risk. The town clock, owned by the Town Council at the centre of the town is in excellent condition but the same cannot be said of others around the circle and surrounding streets.

The façade of the former town hall, now the NCB Club, is crumbling and its current owners have gone into liquidation. The two other pubs in the circle have been closed for some time and need repair prior to reopening and now the building that housed Tredegar Medical Aid Society, the fore runner of the National Health Service, is no longer in use. The General Hospital has closed and is boarded up with no long term future. These are just a few of the buildings at risk in our town.

"Far from sitting back and waiting for our town to crumble we have set up this Heritage Summit, with the full support of stakeholders and the towns' people, to save our history and our heritage. We aim to bring together the experts, the people who hold our future, to the town to hear our story and our concerns, and to find a way forward where we can work together to protect our heritage for future generations," said Cllr Malcolm Cross, Leader of Tredegar Town Council.

"There are however good news stories, The former chapel at Park Place has been transformed into a performing arts centre by the community group Kids R Us and the local authority is undertaking the multi million pound refurbishment of Bedwellty House and Park," Cllr Cross added. "We now need to work together to find solutions for all our buildings at risk. We need experts to survey and record them in case they get lost. We need to protect those that are of value and we need to secure funding to conserve those in use. The only way to do this is to get the full support of everyone, to have a clear vision of the way forward and to share the aspiration of our town's folk, who are not prepared to watch our town crumble. We are a proud town with a proud heritage and a proud people. We've done it before and will continue to fight for our town."

The Summit will be held on Wednesday 9th March 2011 in Tredegar Rugby Club at 7pm please come along to show your support, air your views, come up with solutions and listen to what the experts have to say. For more information call Tredegar Town Council on 01495 722352 or email.
