Friday 26th November 2010, Christmas Light Switch On

A Parade, including Santa and his Sleigh will go from Gwent Shopping Centre at 5.30pm down to the Clock for the Switch-On at 6pm. Following the Switch-On there will be a programme of carols, songs and entertainment around the Clock (full details to follow).

The lights themselves will be a little different this year. The old "string lights" along the main street (Commercial Street and Castle Street) are going to be replaced with motifs on lamp posts throughout the town. The old "string lights" were always a bit hit and miss - one bulb could knock a succession of others out - we learned last year that the wind and wild weather played havoc with them!

The Town Clock will be a far more central feature this year, with LED lights from the clock to buildings around The Circle and a blanket of lights around the Clock column, everything will continue to comply with the regulations governing the Grade II Listed Building status that The Clock enjoys, safeguarding the Clock against damage.

Throughout the Town Christmas trees with sparkling lights will be put on buildings with brackets, as in the past, but this year the trees will be artificial. This ensures the long term visibility of the lights and will help to reduce not only cost but any impact on the wider environment.

The LED lighting throughout the Town will help to reduce the cost of electricity and environmental impact. We understand that this is going to look different, and not everyone will like the changes, but it gives us a chance to build on what we will have and we will take the comments and suggestions of the people of Tredegar onboard.

This year the changes have been made in order to provide a fresh look for the Town and Clock, one that will also help to reduce costs, so vital in the times we live in at the moment, and help to reduce the impact on our environment.

Please come and join us on Friday 26th November 2010 from 5.30pm and together we can all ring the changes to the Christmas Lights of Tredegar.

Thursday 9th December 2010, Wellington Bomber Flight T2520 Memorial Service 6.30pm at St. Georges Church

70 Years on and the Nation remembers…

1940 - Britain was rocked by wave after wave of German aircraft trying desperately to smash the spirit of the people of Britain. But they didn't. This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Blitz, air strikes that tore across Britain flattening many of its towns and cities. But Britain was fighting back - paying a terible price.

One night in December 1940 a Wellington Bomber - Flight T2520 - successfully carried out a raid over Europe and without the benefit of the modern equipment we have these days - crashed in the early hours of the morning into the mountains above Trefil. All six brave young men on board perished.

To mark the 70th Anniversary we are holding a Memorial Service at St. George's Church in Tredegar on Thursday 9th December 2010 and a wreath laying ceremony on Saturday 11th December 2010 at the cairn site. We will be honoured by the presence of military representatives both past and present.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone to join us at the Service at St. George's Church.
